Introduction: The use of natural compounds with medicinal and antimicrobial properties can be used as an organic method for prevention and treatment of infectious diseases in aquaculture.Due to beneficial effects and benefits of ginger (Zingiber officinale) as a medicinal plant, this study was conducted with the aim of investigatingthe effects of extract of this plant on growth, survival and antioxidant defense in Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii). Materials and methods: A total of 180 Siberian sturgeon with an average weight of 13.8 ± 0.11 g wererandomly distributed into four treatments including a control and three experimental treatments (with three replications). Ginger (Zingiber officinale) powder extract was added to the special diet of the experimental groups in proportions of 0.5, 1 and 1.5%. Fish were fed manually with their special diet in fiberglass tanks for eight weeks. At the end of rearing period, the growth indices and antioxidant enzymes were studied. Results and Discussion: No mortality was observed during the two-month rearing period and survival was 100 %. In final weight, final biomass, production, body weight increase (BWI), specific growth rate (SGR), daily growth rate (ADG) and weight gain (WG) were significantly different in treatments (P < 0.05) .the results showed that these indices in treatments 1 , 2 and 3 had an increasing trend compared to the control and the rate of these indices in treatment 1 was more than control and lowest amount was observed in control group. No significant differences were observed in other indices (p > 0.05). On the other hand, in the amount of antioxidant enzymes, CAT, GPX, and SOD were significantly increased and MDA levels were significantly decreased compared to the control (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that ginger extract can be effective in improving the growth performance and antioxidant defense in Acipenser baerii.
